How Often Do Carpets Need Replacing?

Carpets are a popular choice in homes up and down the UK. They provide a cosy alternative to hard floors and are available in a vast array of colours, designs and thicknesses. But as with any purchase for your home, it’s good to know how many years you’ll get back for your investment.

Read on as we discuss how often carpets need replacing and how to extend the lifespan of your carpets.

A general rule of thumb for carpets

Modern carpets will typically last between 5 to 15 years. That timeframe depends quite a lot on the type of carpet in question – more specifically, the pile of the carpet.

Low pile carpets have short fibres, making them flat and dense with a smooth surface. On the other hand, high or deep pile carpets have longer fibres. This gives them a more luxurious look and feel, which is warmer, cosier and more comfortable.

With that being said, high pile carpets do come with their downsides:

  • The longer fibres can gather more dirt, meaning more frequent cleaning may be necessary
  • It’s also more noticeable when the fibres flatten over time
  • As a result, high pile carpets typically need replacing more often
  • To top it off, high pile carpets are more expensive per square metre than their low pile counterparts

Extending the life of your carpets

It’s not just the pile that determines how long your carpet will last. Another key factor is how well it’s looked after. There are a number of best practices that can extend the lifespan of your carpets…

Vacuuming

At the most fundamental level, carpets should be vacuumed at least once a week to remove dirt and debris from the surface before it’s trodden in. If it’s a high-volume area like a living room or hallway, twice a week (or more) is best.

Cleaning stains immediately

If anything that could cause a stain is dropped or spilled onto the carpet, you’ll want to remove it as soon as possible. The longer stains are left untreated, the harder they are to remove.

Removing shoes

Shoes are a sure-fire way for extra dirt to get onto your carpet. Removing shoes before entering your house or carpeted areas is one of the most popular (and most effective) ways to protect your carpet.

Professional cleaning

Vacuuming and spot cleaning can only go so far. A professional deep clean gets beneath the surface to remove germs, bacteria and a whole lot more from your carpet’s fibres. In doing so, it significantly extends the carpet’s lifespan, keeping it fresh and clean for years to come.

Protecting your carpet

Carpet protectants can also be added after cleaning to repel liquids, strengthen fibres and stop dirt penetrating the surface going forward.
